Ways to Play in PGR 3

One of the best reasons to play a racing game is the variety of ways to play it… and Project Gotham Racing® 3 has a lot of variety. Each time you fire up your Xbox 360™, you can choose which style of racing you prefer that day. Some days, you may want to bolt straight to online competition on Gotham TV. On other days, you might prefer the challenge of driving down your hot lap times with specific tracks and cars. Whether you prefer to be ruthlessly competitive, amazingly stylish, or shockingly skilled, PGR 3 is more than just one game – it combines many different types of racing on one Xbox 360 game disc. While we’re waiting for a game to launch, we should talk some more about what’s in store.

Gotham Career

If you’ve played PGR and PGR 2, you’re already familiar with the variety of races in Gotham Career. The latest version of the game includes 23 championship series to test your driving skills. Many of the races are straight-up competitions, including One on Ones, Eliminator Events, Overtake Challenges, and Street Races. Other challenges test your driving skills, whether that’s your ability to take a strong line at high speed through a series of corners in a Speed Camera Challenge, your maneuvering skills in a Cone Challenge, or your efficiency in a Hot Lap or Breakthrough Challenge.

New Challenges

You’ll also have chances to earn Kudos for stylish driving, particularly in two new types of challenges. In a Time vs. Kudos race, you’re racing against the clock to complete a circuit, but you don’t quite have enough time to finish. By pulling off impressive moves and earning Kudos, you add more time to the clock, increasing your chances of finishing before time runs out. Another new type of race is the Drift Challenge, where you’re struggling to hit a target number of Kudos before time runs out. In that type of race, you can only earn Kudos for drift maneuvers. Stay tuned to the site—we’ll be posting more details in the weeks to come about the role drifting plays in the game.

Playtime

Your PGR 3 “career” is just one part of the game. For a more customizable approach to racing, you should definitely check out the playground called Playtime. In Playtime mode, you don’t have to worry about Kudos or credits, and  you can set up races on any track in the game. Instead of methodically unlocking cars, you can jump into high-performance machines right away and push them to their limits—just grab the keys to a supercar and go. When you’re offline, you can decide which cars you’d like to race against, adding each one separately and assigning it a level of driving skill. Through System Link, you can then patch multiple Xbox 360s together for your own racing LAN party, and with Xbox Live®, that party is a bit larger. No matter how you find a group of rival drivers, you can devise your own racing scenarios or leap into a game of your choice. Again, we’ll be writing more about these features in the weeks to come.

Tracks—and More Tracks

If you’re not in the mood for competition or Kudos, you can hone your skills racing against the clock. The game has 80 cars and over 120 tracks, so there’s no shortage of challenges to devise. While you’re in training, you can store your best times on the machine, race against ghosts, and save replays of races. If for some reason you don’t feel like there are enough tracks, you can even use the Route Creator to make more, plotting a course through the streets of one of five cities. After you’ve tested your course, you can focus on time trials for that track or race against other cars offline. Then by combining it with System Link or Xbox Live, you can invite friends and strangers to race against you on your private, custom course. Need more? You can add computer-driven cars to the race … or watch other people race … or save footage of your favorite races….

Get the picture? Gotham Career mode has all the modes of driving you’d expect in PGR, but with new challenges to test your skills. With Playtime, you can do even do even more, customizing the game the way you want it. Gotham TV and Online Career mode add online competition into the mix, giving you the chance to test the skills you’ve learned offline in the virtual world of Xbox Live. We’ll be online, too—experimenting with all the ways to play in Project Gotham Racing 3.
