Albus' PGR 3 Tips: Part Four

Need more Kudos? Albus, a tester at Microsoft Game Studios, has been thrashing on Project Gotham Racing® 3 and has these insightful tips to share in a multi-part series of articles. Part four continues with strategy for some particularly tough races.

Stopwatch Timed Tournament—Event #1—Hot Lap

This is the first event that will make you throw your controller. It’s just mean. Night time, fast track, blind braking zones, and any wall hit and it’s over. I can run it fast, but I can’t run it fast and get Kudos. It’s just that tight.

I like the Enzo Ferrari (B class) and can run it in under 47 seconds (Platinum time is 48.20 as of this writing) but when I try to get Kudos, I never make it. Just drive fast and don’t hit anything. It’s so simple.

NY Open Bridge Series—Event #3—Drift Challenge

Remember, the timer doesn’t start until you cross the start/finish line. Back up at the start and get a full-speed run at the first turn. I didn’t do a shimmy before the first turn but did one coming out of it. Try to keep the combo going until the clock runs out.

NY Open Bridge Series—Event #4—Speed Challenge

It’s not hard in an F50 GT, or a F50, but I really struggled and gave up trying to get my Enzo Ferrari to the promised land. I just couldn’t exit the turn fast enough.

This race will eventually be the key to the top of all these Leaderboards.

Breakneck World Tour—Event #2—Timed Run

This one isn’t really hard but it’s frustrating. The race is only 10 turns, but the approaches to some of these turns are at outlandish speeds because of the bridges. You can’t do more than scrape a wall if you want to finish.

To get the big Kudos, you’re going to have to pick and choose which areas you want to slide through. You want to corner quickly (with little or no sliding) in the other turns so you have time to finish. I think the best place to earn combos is just after the first long bridge section. You have three turns there that you can shimmy a bit and earn combos. Not a whole lot of room in this one for Kudos—it’s pretty challenging just to drive clean.

Breakneck World Tour—Event #3—Timed Run

This event is like dancing on a razor blade. Every turn is unique with bumps, elevation changes, blind turns, and non-uniform guard rails. It’s very fast and, at times, very narrow.

If you complete this event at Platinum level, you’re a good driver. But to get the Kudos, it’s all about controlled drifting. Throw a little A button (e-brake) in to scrub off speed entering turns (instead of just braking/pointing/accelerating which is the proper form). You must not scrub off too much speed. It’s a very tight balancing act, but it’s the only way to get some decent Kudos since there aren’t too many big combo sections, and there isn’t enough time to “store up” for a couple shimmys here or there. You’re trying to go fast, but you can use slides to scrub off speed instead of braking.

Breakneck World Tour—Event #6—Hot Lap

This race is probably the toughest challenge in the game. It took me six or seven attempts to merely finish in time (52.75 seconds is required and I got 52.12). There just isn’t a lot of time to trick on this run.

Here’s my advice: Think of the first three turns as a tough combo right at the start because of the elevation change on the track. If you are struggling to finish under the time limit, don’t try sliding (at all) in this section. Take the first turn slow so you can exit on the right side, and then go down the downhill underpass and setup for the hard 90-degree left turn. You need speed out of that complex a lot more than you need speed into it.
