Albus' PGR 3 Tips: Part Three
Part Three includes strategies for some particularly tough races.
Tough Events (to Platinum)
Whitehall Walk Style Cup—Event #1—Speed Challenge
This is probably the first event that will separate the good drivers from the bad ones. You must have good skill and a very good racing line to beat this one. You need a car with good grip to take a wide arc with no drift. I did it in the Ultima GTR. Or, you can choose a car with gobs of power, kick out the back, and drift it ‘round the turn (such as with a Ferrari Enzo or F50 GT).
Note: To eke out a tad more Kudos, start the event by backing up (through the arches). There is an event timer, but it gives you enough time to back up and get a running start at the opening chicane.
Whitehall Walk Style Cup—Event #2—Overtake Challenge
I didn’t really have trouble with this one, but I heard others were having a lot of trouble with it. The key is patience. The lead cars have a ¼ lap lead on you, so you’ll only catch them if you pass cleanly and avoid hitting the walls.
To get uber Kudos, draft cars as you pass them. Also, draft as you enter a braking zone, then kick out the back as you apex so you get a nice combo. Again, try to string drafting, overtakes, and drifts to generate the longest chain of combos possible.
Your event is over the moment you pass the final car. At the Platinum level you’re aiming to pass seven cars—but if you still have time left, don’t pass the last car. Trick some more maneuvers (such as slide, shimmy, and draft) and try to pass the final car only as time is running out. Maximize your time.
Vegas Strip Race Series—Event #3—Street Race
I love Vegas. The streets are wide, the turns are flowing, and the scenery is divine. But this event is tough. You need the right car. To beat this at the Platinum level, you want the best drag racer you can get. The circuit (Flamingo Straits) is simply two long straightaways with a couple of U-turns at each end. You want the fastest car you can afford. Never mind grip—you’ll hardly need it.
To get the most Kudos, you’ll have to drift as much of the turns as possible and draft/combo going in and out of those turn sections. You’re just not going to get many Kudos on the straights (other than draft/overtake Kudos), so don’t try. Use the straights to gain time that you’re going to scrub off drifting in the rare rounded sections of the course.
Vegas Cones & Cameras Cup—Event #3—Speed Challenge
This one is not that hard to win at Platinum level, but if you want maximum Kudos you will need to combo the entire event (using as much clock as possible) and only go fast on the final turn and the short length of straight track to the finish line. Remember, you can back up a little to start this one so you can get a shimmy in just as you start the event.
Manhattan Time Trial—Event #2—Hot Lap
This is probably the second event that will separate the contenders from the pretenders. It’s a challenge just to finish this one in time at Platinum level. To eke out more Kudos, you really have to time your drifts well so that you’re gaining Kudos but not scrubbing off too much speed.
The chicane through the overpass is the only tricky section. I drive in hard then brake and pivot to create a hard/scrubby drift to the right, and then swing the car violently into a drift for the left/exit section of that stretch. If you can keep speed through there and drift both sections, you’ll get a decent Kudos score and still have time to complete this track.
